EclipseCon Europe 2012: We need your help!

From October 23 to 25, 2012 the Eclipse Foundation will hold the 6 7th edition of our annual European Eclipse Conference.

EclipseCon Europe is all about community - learning, exploring, sharing and collaborating on the latest ideas and information about Eclipse. Contributors, adopters, extenders, service providers, consumer, business and research organizations alike, gather to share their expertise and learn from each other. 

Networking activities lead to synergies in the community, from giving and receiving help on specific technical issues to  generating new business opportunities. Sponsors of Eclipse Summit are an integral part of the entire event, participating in an exchange from all areas of their organizations from technical to management.

Last year we celebrated Eclipse's 10th anniversary together with more than 550 attendees at EclipseCon Europe.  This year the conference theme is open innovation: how enterprises, researchers and other organizations use Eclipse to develop innovative products and solutions. 

We are also co-hosting the European OSGi community event and are extending a special welcome to the International OSGi community. And, again  we are proud to have a solid technical program, but we won't just be networking and listening to technical talks. Let us surprise you with our evening program! Details will be published in the early part of October.

Schedule June 4 - 15

Demo camp season is now starting for real.

On Monday, June 4th I'll be traveling to Leipzig, where I was invited to talk about Open Source Software at the university of Leipzig. Then I'll figure out how to get from Leipzig to Ilmenau for the first Ilmenau Eclipse  demo camp on the 5th. In case you've never been in Ilmenau: It a nice university town in the middle of the Thuringian forest , a quite attractive area in the new provinces.

On the 6th I'll attend another first, the Juno demo camp in Nuremberg. Both demo camps have between 20 and 30 people registered at the time of writing. It would be great if you could drop by too!

The following week I'll be in Kassel on the 12th and in Hamburg on the 14th. The organizers of the 2 locations always come up with some interesting ideas: So will the event in Kassel take place in an actual circus, and -well- for Hamburg I'm still waiting for the location to be announced ...

As every year, many organizations in Europe have volunteered to organize a demo camp in their city. Where and when? You find out on our Wiki page when the excitement comes to your town!

What is a Demo Camp?
It's an informal "After-Work" event, where you'll see a lot of code, and hardly any PowerPoint slides! Before, during and after the talks is enough time to network, have a drink and a bite to eat.

What is your role?
Well, you can either participate, listen, eat and drink and have a good time, or you can present what you have. Please add yourself to the respective wiki page or contact the local organizers to either register as a participant or as a speaker.

October Travel

Arrived in Stuttgart just now for the Amalthea meeting. If you care about embedded multicore applications and model driven development in Automotive, you better check this project.

Tomorrow a trip to Zurich (Switzerland) for the first Eclipse Stammtisch there - can you believe it took 10 years to get to this initial event? Thanks to the folks from Scout project to get this going.

On Sunday I fly to Bilbao, Spain for the second edition of the Eclipse Embedded Day Spain. Last year I only participated through Skype, so this year I look forward to attend in person (supposedly it is warmer than in Zwingenberg too).

And so it goes on in October - no remorse:

On October 21st I have the pleasure to speak at NuxeoWorld in Paris, the week after I will attend the ITEA2 / Artemis Co-Summit in Helsinki. And just when I get back I'll head together with my colleague Wayne Beaton to Leuven in Belgium for a special Eclipse event the Belgium Java user group has organized.

Long Term Support Initiative: Workshop Invitation

For over five years, Eclipse has provided a coordinated release of projects on the last week of June. Subsequently, each September and February there are service releases known simply as "Service Release 1" and "Service Release 2" respectively. SR1 and SR2 only address bugs and fixes in the releases. New features and API changes are developed exclusively in the code stream for the next major release. This cycle repeats yearly.

The consequence of this aggressive and successful development style is that organizations that need to remain "API stable" are left behind after SR2. All future bug fixes will only occur in the subsequent (and API changed) versions. For many organizations, this is not a major issue. Users are on a leading edge of technology, and welcome the major new updates each year.
As the number of Eclipse projects used by the company grows and as this company is shipping products based on the Eclipse platform, the need better organized support structures arises, since the company may have a support obligation for many years towards their customers. Other companies may be bound to such support obligations due to regulations in their specific domain (e.g., medical devices, aerospace).

We from the Eclipse Foundation have been asked in 2010 by a number of large Eclipse consumers to come up with a proposal how a long-term support eco system could be formed.

A good summary of the problem space and a solution scenario was provided by Jochen Krause and Karsten Schmidt in their talk at Eclipse Con 2011 (http://www.slideshare.net/KarstenSchmidt1/econ-2011-eclipse-lts).

After various discussions with consumers such as SAP and Ericsson, typical support providers such as Atos Origin and organizations that have the technical skills to provide bug fixes such as EclipseSource we have created a proposal, including the business side as well as the technical implementation.

To discuss this proposal and its implications SAP and Eclipse Foundation are hosting a one-day workshop on July 11th, 2011 in Walldorf, Germany. If you'd like to participate, send an email to ralph.mueller@eclipse.org. The number of participants is limited, so let me know as soon as possible.

Welcome Verit GmbH to the Eclipse Foundation

verit Informationssysteme GmbH has just recently joined the Eclipse Foudation as a Solution Member.

The Kaiserslautern, Germany based company develops software for Java and Eclipse and is renown as an expert for quality assurance and testing of software systems.

In addition, verit GmbH offer tools to support test automation and test management: While PETA is testing on the protocol-level, KLAROS can be used for test data acquisition and analysis.

In addition, verit engineers have just become an active contributor to TPTP.

We look forward to having verit participating in the Eclipse Eco System.

Welcome Chronon Systems to the Eclipse Foundation

Chronon Systems has just recently joined the Eclipse Foundation as a Solution Member.

The San Mateo based company won with its Chronon technology the first "Eclipse Hot New Products Showcase", held during EclipseCon 2011. The new product showcase award is given to the hottest Eclipse-based product, as voted by EclipseCon attendees, built or released in the last year.

Chronon consists of a

o “flight data recorder” for Java programs which can record every line of code executed inside a program and save it to a file on the disk. The file can be shared among developers and played back in our special time travelling debugger to instantly find the root cause of an issue.

o Time Travelling Debugger, with a novel UI that plugs seamlessly into Eclipse, which allows you to playback the recordings. It not only steps back and forth, but also to any point in the execution of your program

Welcome Generative Software to the Eclipse Foundation

Generative Software GmbH has just recently joined the Eclipse Foundation as a Solution Member.

The Freiburg, Germany based company focuses on the application of model-driven software development. They are the inventor and supporter of the open source code generation tool JenerateIT. By means of gApp, their collection of DSLs and code generation rules, they develop custom Java-centricsoftware for their customers. gApp is dependent on JenerateIT as its code generation engine.

JenerateIT implements API-based Java development of code generation rules and can be used with any kind of model as its input. JenerateIT's Eclipse plug-in is thegraphical user interface to the code generation engine. Eclipse Banking Day Copenhagen, June 1, 2010

Eclipse Banking Day is a day-long event for senior technical developers, architects and managers in the finance industry to learn how to better leverage Eclipse technology and the Eclipse community as part of their development strategy. The event will focus on three themes:

1. Eclipse as a platform for application development;
2. Leveraging Eclipse modeling technology for data exchange; and
3. Collaborating with the open source community.

Welcome RCP Vision to the Eclipse Foundation

The Florence and Livorno/Italy based company joined the Eclipse Foundation as a solution member

RCP Vision provides training and consulting services for Eclipse related technologies.

Supporting the adoption of Eclipse platform and exploring Eclipse development techniques is the primary goal. Mirroring Eclipse in Italy, publishing tutorials on the company site (http://www.rcp-vision.com) and mentoring are others activities.

Be A Speaker At Eclipse Testing Day

The Eclipse Testing Day is a day-long event for technical developers, testers, architects, and managers to learn more about testing with Eclipse and OSGi technology. It will take place at the Commundo Tagungshotel in Darmstadt on the 8th September.

We are looking for contributions that fit into the areas of:

1. Testing Eclipse as a platform for application development
2. Testing OSGi-based applications
3. Testing Tools based on Eclipse

Talks will last 45 minutes, including time for questions. Presentations that include demos or are based on real-life projects are especially welcome.

Please submit your proposals by July 2nd to testingday@microdoc.com. Please include the following information in your proposal:

- Presentation title and 100-200 word abstract
- Name, affiliation, 100-200 word bio, picture and contact information
- Language (English preferred)
