I'm very pleased to welcome FOSSLC Germany e.V. to the Eclipse Foundation as an associate member.

As FOSSLC describes itself:

FOSSLC e.V. is a non-profit organization with the purpose of spreading knowledge and awareness of open source and open standards by organizing and hosting free-of-charge workshops and talks to give everybody the chance to engage with these technologies.

Since 2008, FOSSLC e.V. is hosting events on topics such as LInux, Java, Python, TeX, SSL/PGP and many more with the help from reputable speakers from universities and open source related businesses.

The Eclipse Foundation is very grateful to FOSSLC e.V. for having recorded the 2011 edition of EclipseCon Europe for us. Having the recordings of pretty much every talk available at the FOSSLC site is a great thing for the community!

I look forward to working with FOSSLC e.V. in the future, visiting Ilmenau for mutual events and having them attend and record many more Eclipse related session!

Two more days

All is set and organized, I was told by the fabulous Anne Jacko yesterday evening.

The registration numbers numbers look all right, I was told by Anne as well.

The EclipseCon band - well I called and all members are healthy, the current flu epidemic that has hit my town didn't get to them.

Wireless seems to be better than ever, Anne tells me.

So it looks like everything is in good order.

But still, I'm sort of nervous.

Welcome the University of Milano Bicocca to the Eclipse Foundation

I would like to welcome our new associate member University of Milano Bicocca.

The department of computer science has for many years contributed interesting research based on Eclipse technology, we have met at several occasions.

In 2011, the DISC has also been the host of the Academic Eclipse Day Italy where I had the honor to be invited as a speaker.

I appreciate all the work that the universities throughout Italy do in the Eclipse eco system and I hope to see more of their research become available in products and open source projects.

October Travel

Arrived in Stuttgart just now for the Amalthea meeting. If you care about embedded multicore applications and model driven development in Automotive, you better check this project.

Tomorrow a trip to Zurich (Switzerland) for the first Eclipse Stammtisch there - can you believe it took 10 years to get to this initial event? Thanks to the folks from Scout project to get this going.

On Sunday I fly to Bilbao, Spain for the second edition of the Eclipse Embedded Day Spain. Last year I only participated through Skype, so this year I look forward to attend in person (supposedly it is warmer than in Zwingenberg too).

And so it goes on in October - no remorse:

On October 21st I have the pleasure to speak at NuxeoWorld in Paris, the week after I will attend the ITEA2 / Artemis Co-Summit in Helsinki. And just when I get back I'll head together with my colleague Wayne Beaton to Leuven in Belgium for a special Eclipse event the Belgium Java user group has organized.

Just sitting in the train and looking at my calendar for the month, which will be pretty busy and exciting! Here just a few highlights to consider for yourself:

On the 7th we start with the Eclipse Testing Day in Neuss, Germany. What I hear is that there are still a few tickets available.

On September 13th the meeting of the Automotive Industry comes up in Frankfurt, Germany. Check out the Auto IWG Wiki for more information!

In the second half of the month it gets pretty busy as well. In parallel I will attend the 6th Eclipse Day Italy in Milan, Italy (22-23rd) and the 2011 edition of the Open World Forum in Paris, France. Quite a schedule for that week. Too bad, I would have loved to stay a little longer in both cities!

Meanwhile we continue to work on EclipseCon Europe 2011. As you might have seen, we have all the keynote speakers lined up and are just finishing the program, which should be online in a week or two. One thing I can already tell you: It looks like we will have a pretty exciting 10th anniversary event for the Eclipse eco system.

Announcing Eclipse Testing Day 2011

We're pleased to announce that the agenda for the second Eclipse Testing Day has been published, and that registration is now open!

When is the Testing Day?

The Eclipse Testing Day is a whole-day event on the 7th September 2011 in the Commundo Tagungshotel in Humboldtstraße 2, 41468 Neuss, Germany.

What's in it for me?

This year we have eight talks over the course of the day. Topics range from acceptance testing and usability testing to build processes and test processes (requirements, test case definition…). In short, if you’re looking for a chance to hear from the experts for testing, test processes, and the tools and technology that go hand in hand with them, then you should come along!

Alongside the talks you’ll also have the chance to chat to our sponsors and see what they have to offer in terms of testing and process. BREDEX are grateful to all of our co-sponsors and supporters – including the Eclipse Foundation, Xored, GFB Softwareentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, sepp.med, ASQF, EclipseSource, Testing Experience Magazine and Professional Tester Magazine.

How do I register?

We also have a limited number of student tickets at a reduced price. The ticket cost includes catering on the day.

Welcome GitHub to the Eclipse Foundation

GitHub has just recently joined the Eclipse Foundation as a Solution Member.

Based in San Francisco, GitHub is the largest open source code host with over 2 million Git repositories. As I hear from GitHub's clients it is the easiest way to share and collaborate on code and offers unlimited public repositories for free.

GitHub has committers working on the Eclipse EGit project as well as Mylyn tooling for issue tracking, code review and snippet sharing through github.com. This work will be presented at the Eclipse Indigo demo camp at eBay in San Jose, CA.

We look forward to having GitHub participating in the Eclipse eco system!

Long Term Support Initiative: Workshop Invitation

For over five years, Eclipse has provided a coordinated release of projects on the last week of June. Subsequently, each September and February there are service releases known simply as "Service Release 1" and "Service Release 2" respectively. SR1 and SR2 only address bugs and fixes in the releases. New features and API changes are developed exclusively in the code stream for the next major release. This cycle repeats yearly.

The consequence of this aggressive and successful development style is that organizations that need to remain "API stable" are left behind after SR2. All future bug fixes will only occur in the subsequent (and API changed) versions. For many organizations, this is not a major issue. Users are on a leading edge of technology, and welcome the major new updates each year.
As the number of Eclipse projects used by the company grows and as this company is shipping products based on the Eclipse platform, the need better organized support structures arises, since the company may have a support obligation for many years towards their customers. Other companies may be bound to such support obligations due to regulations in their specific domain (e.g., medical devices, aerospace).

We from the Eclipse Foundation have been asked in 2010 by a number of large Eclipse consumers to come up with a proposal how a long-term support eco system could be formed.

A good summary of the problem space and a solution scenario was provided by Jochen Krause and Karsten Schmidt in their talk at Eclipse Con 2011 (http://www.slideshare.net/KarstenSchmidt1/econ-2011-eclipse-lts).

A draft of the program as presented to the Eclipse Board of Directors in November 2010 can be found at the board minutes section of the Eclipse Home page (http://www.eclipse.org/org/foundation/boardminutes/2010_11_exhibits/ExhibitK.pdf).

After various discussions with consumers such as SAP and Ericsson, typical support providers such as Atos Origin and organizations that have the technical skills to provide bug fixes such as EclipseSource we have created a proposal, including the business side as well as the technical implementation.

To discuss this proposal and its implications SAP and Eclipse Foundation are hosting a one-day workshop on July 11th, 2011 in Walldorf, Germany. If you'd like to participate, send an email to ralph.mueller@eclipse.org. The number of participants is limited, so let me know as soon as possible.

verit Informationssysteme GmbH has just recently joined the Eclipse Foudation as a Solution Member.

The Kaiserslautern, Germany based company develops software for Java and Eclipse and is renown as an expert for quality assurance and testing of software systems.

In addition, verit GmbH offer tools to support test automation and test management: While PETA is testing on the protocol-level, KLAROS can be used for test data acquisition and analysis.

In addition, verit engineers have just become an active contributor to TPTP.

Transporting 327.5 million passengers and 50 million net tons of freight every year the company is by far the biggest travel and transport company in Switzerland.

Having experienced their great services for the time I was living in Switzerland I appreciate very much that this very service oriented organization has become a large consumer of the Eclipse platform and Eclipse related services.

We have seen presentations of their applications on various occasions such as the Eclipse Summit, and we look forward to an even closer relationship with SBB through the newly signed membership.

The young start-up is based in Ghent, Belgium. The company is focusing it's efforts around Sigasi HDT, a development tool for VHDL designers (in case you don't know VHDL, consult Wikipedia here). The tool is listed on Eclipse Marketplace in case you want to download it.

As Hendrik Eeckhaut, the CTO of Sigasi, states: We have long been convinced that a solid framework like Eclipse helps everybody. We joined EF in 2008 after we decided to develop our product DITAworks based on Eclipse/RCP and focus our development services on Eclipse components. Besides using a mature and widely used technology for our products and services we experienced following benefits:

Increase of visibility: having our company and product registered on eclipse.org and marketplace we are not just a local provider anymore but visible to all organizations using Eclipse. This kind of visibility would cost us quite a marketing budget to be achieved through different platforms.

Global reach: we are even visible to worldwide potential customers and were able to generate international leads, new customers and a partner in the USA selling our product on the US market. I am sure without presentation on Eclipse site this would not been possible or take much more time and money.

Increase of customers: we were able to get new customers for our development services - also outside of Germany. These people found us on eclipse.org and invited us to bid for their projects.

Co-branding for our product: Having DITAworks based on Eclipse and also providing an out-of-the-box package for documentation of Eclipse applications provides us a nice co-branding for our product. Customers feel that the product has a profound technology base and can easily be integrated with other Eclipse based products, environments etc.

Cooperation: we experienced a good and cooperative approach of Eclipse members among each other (talking about German companies, I do not know how it is in other countries)

We are participating in Eclipse events in order to meet colleagues and potential customers, learn about the latest developments in Eclipse and present our product and services.

These are the major benefits in short and I can say we a good ROI of being a member so far.

Welcome RCP Vision to the Eclipse Foundation

The Florence and Livorno/Italy based company joined the Eclipse Foundation as a solution member

RCP Vision provides training and consulting services for Eclipse related technologies.

Be A Speaker At Eclipse Testing Day

The Eclipse Testing Day is a day-long event for technical developers, testers, architects, and managers to learn more about testing with Eclipse and OSGi technology. It will take place at the Commundo Tagungshotel in Darmstadt on the 8th September.

We are looking for contributions that fit into the areas of:

1. Testing Eclipse as a platform for application development
2. Testing OSGi-based applications
3. Testing Tools based on Eclipse

Talks will last 45 minutes, including time for questions. Presentations that include demos or are based on real-life projects are especially welcome.

Please submit your proposals by July 2nd to testingday@microdoc.com. Please include the following information in your proposal:

- Presentation title and 100-200 word abstract
- Name, affiliation, 100-200 word bio, picture and contact information
- Language (English preferred)

Welcome FZI to the Eclipse Foundation

The FZI Research Centre for Information Technology (http://www.fzi.de), based in Karlsruhe Germany, has recently joined the Eclipse Foundation as an associate member.

FZI is an interdisciplinary non-profit research centre, funded partly by the economics ministry of Baden-Württemberg, partly by cooperative research projects and partly by direct contracts with industry. Its mission is to facilitate technology transfer of innovative solutions in information technology and to provide a bridge between academia and industry.

FZI offers its customers a unique interdisciplinary environment that fosters joint research among diverse fields of Computer Science, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Economics.

Although being independent from a legal and financial point of view, FZI is closely connected to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). FZI has been a great success story for 25 years now, and using its extensive network of contacts both in the academic and the industrial world, it has been an important catalyst for the development of IT in the Karlsruhe region.

Today, FZI has over 150 employees, mostly young scientists with outstanding experience in both research projects and professional consulting activities.

Jasforge is an incubation project and consist in is essence of a framework of collaborative tools which can be installed and used in various contexts. This project is based on our experience of collaborative project with our customers. Jasforge originality come from the fact that the project is based on standard Open Source tools which collaborate together to form a unified solution which follow the development practice of a Continuous Integration process like Hudson or Apache Continuum.

The Italian company Engineering Group has just recently joined the Eclipse Foundation as a solution member.

Engineering Group (http://eng.it/en.aspx) is the major Italian player in IT design, outsourcing, product and consulting services on all vertical markets, with offices in Europe and Latin America. Its Research & Innovation Division manages the SpagoWorld Initiative, including the open source projects SpagoBI, Spagic, Spago4Q and Spago http://www.spagoworld.org.

Engineering has decided to increase its participation in Eclipse, joining the IWG SOA initiative and proposing two new projects in the SOA domain. This way, the company contributes to the development of the new SOA middleware of Eclipse, which aims to become the reference industrial implementation for the development of interoperability solutions and service-oriented architectures.

It is a subsidiary of Sodifrance group (http://www.sodifrance.fr), a french company specialized in IT Modernization projects. Mia-Software has been founded in 2004 to leverage the R&D efforts engaged during the last 20 years by Sodifrance to understand legacy systems and transform them according to new technologies or new business needs.

Mia-Software provides two commercial products : Mia-Studio and Mia-Insight. Mia-Studio is a Model-Driven Software Development solution based on EMF to create and maintain specific code generators for any kind of language (Java, C#, PHP, ADA, C, C++, COBOL, ...). It is used by large companies (banks, insurance, transportation, administration, ...) to generate code compliant with their own architecture, patterns and coding norms. Mia-Insight is a tool for analysing existing software systems. It provides source code analysers for many languages and systems (COBOL, PL1, C, Java, C#, VB6, ...).

Mia-Software contributes to Modisco (http://www.eclipse.org/gmt/modisco), an Eclipse project created by AtlanMod (http://www.emn.fr/z-info/atlanmod/index.php/Main_Page), the INRIA team headed by Jean Bezivin. This project, for which Mia-Software provides 5 committers, aims at providing an open-source platform, based on Eclipse, to facilitate the development of model-driven legacy modernization tools. Modernization projects need this kind of tools to evaluate the quality of existing systems, understand and/or transform them.
